'Love on Death Row' by Melissa Love

How Far Would You Go To Save Your Marriage?  From the outside De’Nesha Cole had the picture perfect life with two beautiful children and Terence, a loving husband. But on the inside, Terence was far from perfect. He’s violent, controlling, and abusive. When her best friends find out what’s been going on behind closed doors, they encourage her to go to the authorities.  But De’Nesha refuses. She is determined to make her marriage work no matter the cost, and death is no exception.

Excerpt:  “These are for you! He said as he slowly brought his hands around to show me the dozen of red and yellow roses he had gotten for me. He kissed me on the back of my neck. “Well, do you like it?”

I couldn’t believe he was acting so casual after just punching me forty minutes ago. He must be suffering from personality dissociation.

“Of course,” I replied with a fake smile on my bruised face. “Thank you, baby.”

“Can you forgive me for the way I have been acting? I know that’s my child you’re carrying. Is it a boy or a girl?” He asked as he rubs my stomach and kissed me tenderly.

“I don’t know yet, it’s too early to tell, but when I go back next week I can ask the doctor and you can go with me if you want to?”

“Hell, yeah, this is my first child, so I got to be there. I called my parents, and they are so thrilled too.”

The only reason I hugged Terence and forgave him is because of our baby, and I know it sounds stupid, but this is our first child and I refuse to be just another single black woman raising a child alone.

Get to know Melissa:

Melissa Love began her love of writing ever since she picked up her first urban-fiction book back in the day. She wanted to turn her love of reading into writing. In 2001 and 2002 she went the self-publishing route and published three books. After a while she knew that self-publishing was not the route she wanted to take, so she continued to write more manuscripts until she was able to get signed with a major publishing house. Writing has become a way for her to be creative in telling compelling stories while writing memorable characters cloaked in lies and deceit. She is a member of the Motown Writer Network and currently resides in Detroit, Michigan with her two daughters.

1. What inspired you to write this book?

I got this idea from working in a female institution as a correctional officer in Virginia, and also while watching an episode of Lifetime Movie Network.

2. How did you come with the title for this book?

The title reflected the love and devotion she had for her marriage and honoring her wedding vows, and death row was the end result of her action.

3. What do you want readers to grasp from reading this book?

I want readers to know that there is help out there if they're in an abusive relationship. I also want readers to grasp just because a person is wealthy doesn't mean they could just up and leave a bad relationship. Some women gets emotionally connected to a situation and it become difficult to break especially when children are involved.

4. Will there be a part 2?

No, there will be no part 2, but I am working on another book.

5. Do you have a favorite character?

My favorite is Betrena, who is one of De'Nesha's best friends. I like her because she will tell it how it is, even if it means hurting feelings.

6. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Making sure the book is believable and entertaining to readers. I know there are going to be some readers who wouldn’t believe a woman would stay in bad relationship for that long, but it true and there are women still out there right now in a long term abusive relationship.

7.  What are current projects?

I am working on another book, but right now I am busy promoting my book, by the way of social media, and here in my home town.

  3. We had been going to the camp 2 bar regularly for some time, and there were usually some of my mates there some playing pool or darts, and some just drinking. There were also a large number of foreign workers mostly from Yugoslavia although I believe that there were a few from some of the other eastern block countries. I was surprised that my wife seemed to enjoy it, as it wasn’t at all what she was used to back home. There were often lots of men looking at my wife because there were very few women who went in there. Read full story here
